Sylvia Griffin, Artist in Residence, May 2026

During her residency at Künstlerhof Frohnau, Sylvia Griffin continues her artistic research into the histories and cultural significance of specific places. Her work at KHF focuses on the nearby former border landscape, particularly the watchtower and the area marking the course of the Berlin Wall, only about 500 meters away.

Under the working title “The Scars of Division, ” Griffin reflects on the traces of geopolitical division and the universal trauma created by divisive political structures. The project addresses processes of “othering” and examines the impact of such systems on civilians who are labeled as belonging to the supposedly wrong political or ideological side.

The work will continue to evolve during her stay on site. Griffin plans to create small silicone molds in the area surrounding the former course of the Berlin Wall, which will later be used for bronze castings. She is also experimenting with cyanotypes on paper and fabric to capture ephemeral qualities of the place, including the vegetation that has regrown there. Furthermore, she intends to extract natural dyes and pigments from these plants, which will be used in textile-based installations.
