In the work Material Palimpsest, Sylvia Griffin draws on the materiality of the Coal Loader site to reflect it’s unique industrial past, layers of disruption, and present state. Fabric was impregnated with mining detritus after being buried and placed around several locations, then overdyed with local flora. It was then stitched, imprinted with the texture of the tunnel walls. Hung in situ, it acts as a living monument to the site and testament to its history.

Material Palimpsest was awarded the Drawing Prize in the North Sydney Art Prize.
